Fly Tying Wax. Shooting Air Rifles. Rifle Accessories. This one is easy. We took our standard test leader and added a small split shot to the end and a Thingamabobber to the butt section of our leader and then cast it!
This category will also tell you how well a line will cast "junk" - like a dry dropper, or a two-dry rig - anything that falls outside of a traditional dry fly or a streamer.
Let's face it, most of us are throwing a lot of bobbers these days. One thing we do a lot in the brush covered streams of the east is roll-cast, so we wanted to see which lines roll casted well.
We also tested this on an open lake, but did two different styles of cast: the old school standard slow d-loop and a much more aggressive Scandi-style touch-and-go single hand spey cast.
Just add a big chunk of split shot to your yarn and you've got the perfect streamer imitation without the dangerous end.
Last, but not least, we included a category for beginning casters. Because no matter where you sit on the casting spectrum, a line that loads better will give you more feedback and be more fun to fish.
And also because, let's face it, you're no Steve Rajeff. We tested this by making a few short casts and seeing how the line loaded each of the rods.
We really wanted to test how well each line floats. Unfortunately, when we started testing, it became very clear that this was not going to be something that we could test.
First, we just dropped the lines into a bucket Even after 24hrs. Then we thought about taking density measurements, and it turns out that the differences are subtle, and not really useful, so we gave up.
We did notice that some lines floated noticeably poorer than others, and we noted that in our reviews. The best way to read these individual reviews is alphabetically, even though it's a TON of reading this review is over 50 pages long in total.
The reason for this is that's how we wrote it, and we found that the best way to talk about fly lines is in reference to other fly lines particularly those that are popular and most people have experience casting.
Below you'll find links to the reviews of each and every fly line we cast. It will work well on most modern fly rods, for most situations, for most anglers.
If you don't want to read all of our reviews individually, here's a table of our favorite lines broken down by rod action and fishing style:.
Below you'll find all of our test data. These images are really big, so if you want to see them, you'll probably want to right click and choose "Save Image As We have also included links to PDF versions.
Taper lengths computed using our taper charts. For individual line taper shapes, please see the review specific to the line. Grain weight measurements taken for 10''' and the full head.
We also included a relative chart as this is helpful in understanding the taper. Last but not least, we scored each of the fly lines in the test.
We seriously considered not including this chart, since there is no magic bullet in fly lines. Let me repeat that: there is no magic bullet.
There is no one size fits all, does everything well fly line. If you buy Royal Wulff Triangle Taper and use it for streamers, you'll probably be disappointed.
The opposite is true for SA Anadro. We highly recommend checking out our chart on "Recommended Lines" above and using that as your guide for selecting a line.
Nevertheless, this is non-distilled version will help you if you're interested in finding, say, the best RIO line for streamers and you don't want to read our full review.
We also only scored some lines on one rod. We did this because there was a massive disparity between how the line performed on one rod vs the other.

Scientific Anglers Fly Line Reviews 9. Teeny Fly Line Reviews. Posted By: Ben F. Andy Warywoda. March 3, at pm. John Mangold. March 7, at pm. Hi: I enjoyed your masterful Fly Line Shoot-out.
The individual line reviews are clear, concise and very useful. The combination of the individual fly line reviews and the "Recommended Lines" chart is all I need to provision my rod collection.
John P. I found the summary score sheet perplexing because you don't explain how the Circa and NRX scores are combined.
Then I noticed that the highest scoring line - the SA Frequency Boost at 36 points total - is not recommended for any rod in any scenario.
So a high score is not necessarily a lock on a recommendation. In conclusion, if you had just supplied the individual fly line reviews and the "Recommended Lines" chart, I would have nothing to complain about!
And you would have done less work! September 26, at am. This is great information, thank you for taking the time to put it all together!
It would very very likely also work well for better anglers in windy conditions. A great all-around line. See the notes on that line.

April 23, at am. Your review of the original TT is spot on. I and most of my dry fly addict buddies have been fishing TT's since the early 's and have never seen a reason to change.
As you point out in the review the TT excels as a "dry fly" line, nymphs and streamers are a whole other matter. Brian Fleury.
March 10, at pm. Hi, I have loved TT's for years as a floater. Does anyone have any experience the TT full sink lines? Leave a comment.

Anyone have any experience with this line? Last edited: Apr 23, If its the Royal Wulff Ambush, which is one of their triangle taper lines, it's an interesting line.
If you're doing a lot of roll casting and in close stuff, it is great. However, if you fish dry flies or anything at longer distances, it gets dicey.
It has a short, stout head on it which is the explanation for both the aforementioned conditions. As far as where it weighs in with regard to line weight, I would have to assume its at least a half size heavier.
If you're doing close-in nymphing and such, it will treat you very well, but otherwise you're better off with a more traditional taper, in my opinion.
Messages 11, Reaction score Location -. Unlike the RIO line which puts weight up front to load a stiffer rod more quickly for shorter shots, the Wulff put its mass rearward and then goes too abruptly into skinny running line.
My friends who like this line use it as a shooting head I am not in thier camp, it loads poorly in close as it lacks mass, is hingy in reach castiang and mending because of the aprupt transition from head to running line which itself is above average in tangling tendency.
Thanks for the info. I was thinking of using it for throwing streamers for smallies and largemouth, and perhaps bigger trout on lakes.
Messages Reaction score 2 Location Illinois. I feel quite the opposite. Ive got a TT WF steelhead line ' on my 8wt and love it.
I fee it turns line over great in short, and is a complete cannon when it comes to distance. Thats why theres 31 flavors I guess. Messages 5 Reaction score 0.
I have a triangle taper 5 weight that I use on my Winston LT and love it. Thanks to both of you guys for your help. I didn't know much about the Wulff TT lines, so any help is appreciated!!!!
Because of how light it is in the beginning of the line, it provides virtually no feel for nymphs and streamers in close, though you can still cast a pretty heavy nymph rig with this line.
It also means that this is a very poor choice for beginning casters. We were also left wanting colors to mark the different parts of the line as well as a loop on the back.
An all-purpose line combines a western style half size heavier head with the roll casting and shooting ability of the Triangle Taper design.
Perfect for today's faster action rods. Bottom line: The only choice for Wulff fans looking for a faster loading line.
Casting Notes: Like the freshwater version, the Triangle Taper Salt is a lightweight-feeling line that casts better with a softer rod.
We thought the line performed decently well on the Helios 3F but were wishing we had something even slower. The line performs best at longer distances with smaller flies.
Think Bonefish. The taper of the head allows for easier turnover and slightly better presentation at short distances with larger flies.
This taper is a Royal Wulff trademark and works well on this line. This line loaded the Meridian really well at short distances and allowed us to cast large flies accurately and easily punch them into the wind with minimal false casting.
The Bermuda Shorts Triangle Taper would make a great line for Bull Reds in Louisiana or big flies at short distances in the mangroves for Snook and other species.
BTT was one of the more interesting lines we cast. It shoots line nicely, then when it runs out of power, perfectly turns over a small fly and gives you a nice presentation.I feel quite the opposite. One Wurms 2 my first fly lines color white, still fishing with it. First, Airflo lines are ridged.
